Great happenings in the youth ministry @ LBC

6 03 2009

This has been one heck of a week for Chrissy and me.  We get back from NYMC and have a day off then I get to go back to minister to the kids that I love at Leon BC.  We finally split the kids into 2 groups, 9 and under and 10 and up.  This seemed to work, no commotion from the kids.  We talked about vision and where to go from here.  Here is what we discussed:

1.  We will no longer be called a youth group.  I feel that when you say group, it puts a limit on the number of people in your group.  Instead, we will be called a student ministry or youth ministry.

2.   I want each and every kid that comes through our ministry to feel like they are pary of family.  Since some of the kids that we have do not have a great home life, we want to create a family-style atmosphere for them!

3.  A class that I was in at NYMC talked about Jesus and the 12 disciples.  Even though He had athe 12, He invested more time into 3. (James, John & Peter)  So, I wanted to do the same.  I asked a couple of girls who were in the 11th grade to give me a have with loving on these kids on a weekly basis.  Which was a success, they both said yes and now I have a staff of volunteers that I can pour my heart out to in the hopes that they will do the same with the others.

I feel that things are starting to fall into place at Leon BC.  One of the girls suggested that we work on a youth room in the church.  We are currently using the church’s fellorship hall as out meeting area.  This seems a little to big and it is too busy for the kids.  The suggestion was to use an old sunday school room in the basement of the church and paint it up and put some couches in there.  Make it more inviting for the kids.  So, we will see how my senior pastor will react to the idea.  Updates to follow!  Just pray the God will let me ride this roller coaster of great things happening @ Leon BC!!

Finally Back Home In WV!

2 03 2009

We finally made it back home today, YEAH!  But, with mixed emotions.  The people that we have met at the conference will be our friends for life.  The reason the I did not blog more at the NYMC is that every time I went to log on, the crazy network was broke down.  Oh well, I will definitely be writing more on this. In the days to follow, I will have some guest contributors to the blog to tell their side of NYMC.  Well, it kinda late and I need to read my bible before bed.  This conference has changed my life forever!

All things good @ NYMC!!

1 03 2009

We are having a blast here at NYMC in Columbus!  Last night, Kay Warren spoke to the crowd about surrendering to God.  WOW! What a speech.  I don’t think that there was a dry eye in the house.  I got the chance to meet Doug Fields, founder of Simply Youth Ministry.  Fantastic guy.  You meet someone you look up to in youth ministry and then you get the chance to meet them and you find out that they are just as normal as you.  Chrissy is doing a fantastic job out here, she is taking classes on “Marrried to a youth  pastor”.  Here are the pics I promised.  More to follow!

What I hope To Gain @ NYMC!

26 02 2009

The other thing that I wanted to say in regards to the NYMC conference, is what I hope to gain from attending.  Well, I hope to learn ideas from some of the leading youth pastors in the country and adapt that to my ministry.  I also want to talk to other youth workers and find out what they are doing in their ministry.  What works for them and what does not.

I hope and pray that my wife will gain an understanding that she is not alone in this thing called youth ministry.  That their are women who, like her who married a youth pastor and have small kids and try to balance all with a grain of salt.

So, here we are!  About to embark on this wild journey to the NYMC in a couple of hours.  Actually, right now, it is 10:52pm and I should be in bed by now.  So, from here on out, everything on this website, will be devoted to the NYMC and all that is going on with me and Chrissy.  Just pray that we have a safe trip and have a blessed time!

Wow! Time sure has flown by tonight.  We are almost packed up.  The only thing left to do is check the fliuds in the truck, put the luggage in and it’s HELLO COLUMBUS!  I can’t wait to get there and get started.  I was talking to my co-workers this morning (you know who you are!!) about what to write about tonight.  Something along the lines of how I got to this point and ready to embark on this fantastic journey.  Also, to write on what I expect to gain this weekend at NYMC (National Youth Ministry Conference).  So, here it goes: {more…} Read the rest of this entry »
